Printable Lined Paper

Ruled writing paper with the line spacing you need, an optional margin line and name/date header.

College ruled with margin line
Lined paper is paper printed with evenly spaced horizontal lines to guide handwriting, and it is also called ruled paper. This lined paper generator creates a printable sheet in your web browser. It is free, and you do not need to sign up or download anything. The default is college rule with light blue lines and a red vertical margin line. You can change the paper size, line spacing, colour and weight before you print or save the sheet. Your settings are not uploaded. Print it at home for writing practice, letters, essays or class handouts, as many pages as you need.

How to use the lined paper generator

  1. Choose a paper size: US Letter, A4, US Legal, Tabloid, A3 or A5. Then pick portrait or landscape.
  2. Set the line spacing. Pick wide, college, narrow, 8 mm, 10 mm or 1/2 in, or enter any custom spacing from 3 to 40 mm.
  3. Choose a line colour (light blue, grey, black, green, red, purple or a custom colour) and a weight: fine, normal or bold.
  4. Keep the red margin line or switch it off. The margin defaults to 10 mm, and you can choose a value from 1/4 in to 1 in or enter your own.
  5. Add an optional title at the top, and a Name and Date line if you need one.
  6. Set the number of pages, from 1 to 50 identical pages.
  7. Check the preview and the line count under it (36 college-ruled lines on US Letter), then use Print, Download PDF, SVG or Copy link.

To print at the correct size, choose 100 % or “Actual size” in the print dialog and turn off “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”. Fitting to the page shrinks the spacing slightly. The small site address in the bottom margin can also be switched off in the page settings. Copy link saves all your current settings, so you can recreate or share the same sheet later.

What is lined paper?

Lined paper is writing paper with horizontal lines spaced at an equal distance down the whole page. The even spacing keeps the height of your handwriting consistent from the top of the sheet to the bottom. Most lined sheets also have a vertical margin line, which gives you a space on the left for notes or page numbers. The red margin line on this page sits 1.25 in from the left edge, where US notebook paper usually places it.

The main choice with lined paper is the gap between lines. That gap is set by the paper’s rule, and the generator measures it in millimetres so you can match the paper you need. If you want a sheet that fits your handwriting, the spacing matters more than any other setting.

What is lined paper called?

Lined paper is most often called ruled paper. In the United States each line spacing is called a “rule”. Wide rule, college rule and narrow rule are the three standard names you will see on pads and notebooks.

Other names such as lined writing paper or notebook paper describe the same kind of sheet. The name does not change what the paper does: it gives you evenly spaced lines to write on. When you search for a spacing, use the rule name or the millimetre measurement to get exactly the spacing you want.

What is the difference between wide ruled and college ruled?

Wide ruled paper has lines 11/32 in (8.73 mm) apart, while college ruled paper has lines 9/32 in (7.14 mm) apart. The difference is about 1.6 mm per line, which is small on a single line but adds up over a full page. Wide rule leaves more room for each line of handwriting, and that is why it is usually chosen for younger students and larger handwriting.

College rule fits more lines on the same sheet. On US Letter with 10 mm margins, college rule gives 36 lines and wide rule gives 29 lines. For that reason, college rule is the common choice for high school, university and adult writing.

What is narrow ruled paper?

Narrow ruled paper has lines 1/4 in (6.35 mm) apart, which makes it the tightest of the three standard US rules. Its tighter spacing puts the most lines on a page: 40 on US Letter with 10 mm margins. Narrow rule is useful when you need to fit a long set of notes onto one sheet.

Narrow rule is about 0.8 mm closer than college rule, so small handwriting that fits neatly on college rule can feel cramped on narrow rule. If you prefer a metric spacing, the 8 mm preset on A4 gives 34 lines. You can also enter any custom spacing from 3 to 40 mm.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use lined paper?

Write each line of text so that the bottom of the letters sits on a line, and keep the spacing even from top to bottom. Use the left margin line to start your text or to add notes, page numbers or dates. For a sheet made with this tool, choose the spacing that suits the writer and print it at actual size.

Which line spacing should I choose for a young child?

Wide rule is usually the best fit for younger students and for larger handwriting. The extra space between lines gives room for letters that are still taking shape. Once handwriting gets smaller and more even, college rule is a common next step.

Why does my printout look smaller than the preview?

Your browser may have used the “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit” setting, which reduces the sheet slightly. Choose 100 % or “Actual size” in the print dialog and turn off the fit option. Then print again to get the spacing shown in the preview.

Is this the handwriting paper with a dashed midline?

No. Primary handwriting paper for early writers, which has a dashed midline, is a different kind of paper. This page makes single-line ruled paper, so it does not add a midline.

Can I print several pages with the same lines?

Yes. Set the number of pages in the PDF from 1 to 50, and each page will be identical. This is useful when you need a full set of practice sheets with the same spacing.

Can I set my own line spacing?

Yes. Choose “Custom size…” in the line spacing menu and type any value from 3 to 40 mm (or the same in inches) when the presets do not match what you need.

How can I save or share my settings?

Use Copy link to store all of your current settings in one link. Anyone who opens that link can recreate the same sheet. The page also remembers the paper size you chose last time in your browser.
