1 Inch Graph Paper

Big one-inch squares for young students, tiles, quilts and plans, drawn exactly 25.4 mm wide.

1 inch squares on US Letter

1 inch graph paper is a printable sheet of squares that each measure exactly 1 inch (25.4 mm) on every side. This free graph paper generator builds a 1 inch grid paper sheet in your web browser, so you can print it or download it as a PDF without signing up or installing anything. Choose a paper size, pick the 1 in preset, and adjust the lines, numbers and margins until the sheet suits your project.

People use this one inch square graph paper for young children’s maths and handwriting, for counting and area work with tiles, and for quilt and woodworking plans at 1 in = 1 ft or 1 in = 1 unit. It also suits large-scale diagrams, board games such as dots and boxes or battleship, and garden plans. Every sheet is made of whole squares, so you can count them directly on the page.

How to make 1 inch graph paper

  1. Choose a paper size: US Letter, A4, US Legal, Tabloid, A3 or A5. Then pick portrait or landscape.
  2. Set the square size. Select the 1 in plain preset for standard one-inch squares, or type a custom size in millimetres or inches.
  3. Add optional detail: a heavier line every 2, 4, 5, 8 or 10 squares, numbers along the top and left edges (every line, every 5 or every 10), and a heavier outer border.
  4. Set the line colour (light blue, grey, black, green, red, purple or a custom colour) and the line weight (fine, normal or bold).
  5. Under Page and print settings, set the margin, add an optional title, add an optional Name and Date line, choose the number of pages (1 to 50), and switch the small site address in the bottom margin on or off.
  6. Check the line under the preview. It reports how many squares fit, such as 7 × 10 on US Letter.
  7. Press Print, Download PDF, or SVG. Press Copy link to save all current settings.

For true-size squares, print at 100% or “Actual size” and turn off “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit” in the print dialog. The page remembers the paper size you chose last time, and a copied link lets you recreate or share the same sheet later.

How many 1 inch squares fit on a page?

On US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) and on A4, the default 10 mm margins give 7 × 10 one-inch squares. On US Letter the grid is centred, which leaves 3/4 in at each side and 1/2 in at the top and bottom. Tabloid (11 × 17 in) holds 10 × 16 one-inch squares with the same margins.

The grid is always built from whole squares, so the count is the number of complete squares that fit inside the printable area. Wider margins leave less room and give fewer squares. The line under the preview shows the exact count for your settings.

What is 1 inch graph paper used for?

1 inch graph paper is used wherever a large, simple grid helps someone count, draw or measure. Young children use it for maths, handwriting, and counting or finding area with tiles. Each square is big enough to hold a tile or a finger.

Makers use it for quilt and woodworking layouts, where one square stands for 1 foot or 1 unit. For example, if 1 inch = 1 foot, a line seven squares long represents 7 feet. Adults also use it for large-scale diagrams, games such as dots and boxes or battleship, and garden plans.

Can I print it with smaller squares inside each inch?

Yes. The “1 in blocks divided into 1/4 in squares” preset splits each inch into a 4 × 4 set of small squares. A heavier line appears every 4 squares, so each one-inch block stays easy to see. The 1/2 in preset gives 2 × 2 squares per inch.

You can also type a custom square size. The heavier-line options then help you mark the inch lines on top of the smaller grid.

Will the squares be exactly one inch?

Yes. Each square is drawn exactly 25.4 mm wide, and the PDF page is exactly the paper size you chose. The printed result depends on your print settings, though. Fitting the sheet to the page shrinks every square slightly, so print at 100% and check a printed square with a ruler.

Frequently asked questions

Is free printable 1 inch graph paper really free?

Yes. The generator is free, needs no sign-up, and requires no download. Your settings are not uploaded.

Can I make 1 inch by 1 inch graph paper on A4?

Yes. A4 (210 × 297 mm) gives 7 × 10 one-inch squares with the default 10 mm margin. Choose A4 from the paper size list, then select the 1 in plain preset.

Can I add numbers, a title or my name to the sheet?

Yes. Numbers can run along the top and left edges on every line, every 5 squares or every 10 squares. Under Page and print settings you can add an optional title at the top and an optional Name and Date line.

Can I save the sheet as a PDF and share the same settings?

Yes. Download PDF creates a vector PDF whose page is exactly the chosen paper size, and you can set it to 1 to 50 identical pages. Copy link stores all current settings, so the same sheet can be recreated or shared.

Why are there only 7 squares across?

US Letter is 8.5 inches wide; after the 10 mm margins about 7.7 inches remain, and the generator draws only whole squares, so 7 one-inch squares fit. Narrower margins or landscape orientation change the count.
